Under The Turban
ABOUT
A family travels the globe meeting with diverse communities of Sikhs; farmers, maharajas motorcycle clubs, fashionistas and cheesemakers to get ‘under the turban’ and learn about Sikhism, the worlds’ fifth largest religion.
What makes me a Sikh?
This question posed by nine year old Zara Garcha starts a family’s journey to learn about their religion. The Garcha family's journey begins in Parma where they meet Sikhs who have a hand in creating Italy’s iconic Parmesan cheese. Asking questions about immigration, identity and spirituality, a portrait of a modern Sikh community begins to take shape. From there the Garcha family heads east traveling to The Golden Temple in Sikhism’s holy city, Amritsar, learning about the historical foundations and social history of the religion. Lived experience blends with academic insight as the family travels to the United Kingdom, Argentina, Canada and America gaining a better understanding of these modern Sikh communities and the fundamental aspects of this often misunderstood religion.

A family travels the globe meeting with diverse communities of Sikhs; farmers, maharajas motorcycle clubs, fashionistas and cheesemakers to get ‘under the turban’ and learn about Sikhism...
Inspired by nine-year-old Zara Garcha asking "What does it mean to be Sikh", her family decides to answer it in a most extraordinary manner—by embarking on an international journey to learn about their heritage from modern day Sikhs. From Italy to India to Great Britain, Argentina, Canada, and the United States, Zara and her family traverse the globe and meet some of the most interesting, generous, and compassionate people on Earth. And in so doing, they remind us that, to fully understand our fellow human beings, we must judge not solely by what is on one’s head, but by what is in one’s heart.
